Research Paper Checklist
The following information from Purdue Owl should be used for the MLA formatting of your research paper.
__________The research paper is in font size 12 and has a consistent, traditional font throughout.
__________Leave only one space after periods or other punctuation marks.
__________Indent the first line of paragraphs one half-inch from the left margin.
__________Insert page numbers for the upper right-hand corner using the insert tab at the top of the page.
Formatting the First Page of Your Paper
__________Insert page numbers for the upper right-hand corner using the insert tab at the
top of the page and scrolling down. (I will not require you to add your name with
the page number as some teachers might request).
__________ In the upper left-hand corner of the first page, list your name, your instructor’s
name, the course, and the date. Again, be sure to use double-spaced text.
__________Double space again and center the title. Do not underline, italicize, or place your
title in quotation marks; write the title in Title Case (standard capitalization), not in
all capital letters. Your title should be written as it was approved (it’s not your

Introduction, Body Paragraphs, and Conclusion
__________There is an attention getter to begin the introductory paragraph followed by an explanation.
__________The thesis is a complete thought.
__________Three details follow the thesis followed by a concluding sentence.
__________There is a minimum of 3 content pages.
__________The paper is organized and well developed with 10 or more complete sentences. Great sentence variety is present.
__________There are 3 quotes and 3 paraphrases with the name of the author or website
mentioned along with a page number. Ex: According to Dr. Smith, “…………….” (p. 4). If you are using a website and there is no page number, add the URL.
PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO THE PUNCTUATION IN THE ABOVE EXAMPLE.
MLA Works Cited Page
__________Begin your Works Cited page on a separate page at the end of your research
paper. It should have the same one-inch margins and page number as the rest of your paper.
__________Label the page Works Cited (do not italicize the words Works Cited or put them in
quotation marks) and center the words Works Cited at the top of the page.
__________Double space all citations, but do not skip spaces between entries.
__________Indent the second and subsequent lines of citations by 0.5 inches to create a hanging indent. (reverse indent)
